Catrinas Festival 2022 celebrating the Day of the Dead

El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Though related, the two annual events differ greatly in traditions and tone. Day of the Dead festivities unfold over days of explosions of color and life-affirming joy. The theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members and to honor their legacies.

In towns and cities throughout Mexico, revelers don funky makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing, dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones. El Día de los Muertos is celebrated on Nov. 1, the day after the traditional Halloween we know and love. Although marked throughout Latin America, El Día de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated.

This year, for the first time in Seattle, you can join in the festivities too! The Catrinas Festival 2022, celebrating the Day of the Dead, will be held from Oct. 26 through Nov. 2 at Club Sur at 2901 First Ave. S.

You're encouraged to bring pictures, flowers, candles, and mementos of loved ones to place on the altar decorated with flowers, folk art, and "ofrendas" (offerings) inside Club Sur. During every day of the event, a candlelight procession and Catrinas and Catrinos parade with live Mexican music will happen from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the corner of S. Forest Street and Utah Avenue S. At the end of the parade, Club Sur will host an authentic Mexican "fiesta" to commemorate the legacy of the dead.

The Catrinas Festival offers live music performances ranging from mariachi to traditional Aztec and Mayan dance performances, ballet "Folklórico," Mexican charros, displays of traditional altars and original folk art, children's workshops, handcrafts, a wall of memories, the "En Vida" awards, calavera face painting, and more!

Families are welcome each day of the event from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. to enjoy the activities of the festival and the popular Mexican street market and its products, food, culture, art, and services.

The concerts starting after 9 p.m. will be inside Club Sur. General admission to the festival is $20, and tickets to the festival do not include admission to concerts after 9 p.m. The cost of concert tickets will vary depending on the performer.

Tickets are on sale now, so don't miss out on your chance to celebrate the Day of the Dead! Visit www.seattledayofthedead.com and www.seattlecatrinasfestival.com for more information, or email usalatinofestivals@gmail.com if you have specific questions.
