Dodge "Brown Friday" in your home this holiday season

The holidays are a busy time for families and friends as they gather to be merry and celebrate together. This time of year is also busy for plumbers because these gatherings put an increased amount of pressure on your bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry room.

You'll probably deal with at least one plumbing issue during your celebrations, even if it's just grabbing a plunger or clearing a drain. That's if you're lucky, though. A holiday gathering can easily turn into a plumbing catastrophe.

Rather than wishing for an incident-free holiday season, use these tips from the pros at Bob Oates Plumbing, Sewer and Rooter to avoid the mess altogether. Planning ahead now is a whole lot better than watching your Black Friday turn into Brown Friday with one flush.

When in doubt, don't flush it down the toilet.

Feminine products, baby wipes, and Q-tips are harmful to your pipe system and can get clogged much more easily than toilet paper. If it's something you normally would throw in the trash, don't try flushing it down the toilet.

Watch out for hair in the shower.

Consider buying a hair-catching filter and installing it before your guests arrive. Have a drain snake on hand too, just in case you need to fish out some gunk or you want to stay on top of things.

Don't allow too many cooks in the kitchen.

Remember to avoid putting grease down your drain, as well as any large food products or trimmings down your garbage disposals. If you run into a blockage, watch our segment above for a simple tip for clearing "stuck disposals."

Give your clothes a quick rinse before throwing them in the wash.

Keep in mind to hose off your heavily soiled laundry before throwing anything in the laundry machine. Debris from pumpkin patches or turkey bowl games can causes issues in your washing machine and can even get back up the drain lines behind your walls.

Post reminders around the house.

Just like you might see in a hotel, write notes and place them near things you want to protect. A little reminder facing your guests in the face will hopefully encourage them to do the right thing and save everybody the trouble of cleaning up a big mess.
