Beneath the Streets: Explore Seattle history from underground

When walking the streets of Pioneer Square, many have no idea what's underneath them — real history just below their feet.

We're talking about underground passageways — yup, you read that right. You can explore them through Beneath the Streets, a boutique tour company offering a first-hand look at what lies beneath Seattle's original neighborhood, Pioneer Square.

Terrilyn Johnson is the co-owner of Beneath The Streets. She says it all started back in 1889 when the Great Seattle Fire destroyed the entire Central District.

"It's like peeling back time, and I think people are always enchanted with this out of sight, out of mind and the possibility that things existed. What happened down here? The stories they tell," Johnson said.

These tours, led by seasoned tour guides, are informative, fun and a bit spooky, perfect for any history buff or adventure lover.

"I love that 'ah, ha' moment, and that interaction with the guests and meeting people from all over the world, helping people understand the underground and dispelling myths," said Johnson. "Helping them see the beauty in this is amazing. I love it."

Tours are one hour, cost around $25 and can be booked daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required.
