Federal Way has been called a bedroom community, but now it might be called a living room and garden community as well.
Watson's Greenhouse and Nursery has just opened its doors in Federal Way, and that means more plants and flowers will be blooming in people's homes and yards this spring as access to the popular store expands.
This is the second location for Watson's, which has been family-owned and run since 1974. For decades, its flagship store in Puyallup has been the South Sound's premier destination for home, garden, and lifestyle products and expertise. It draws devoted customers year-round from all over the Puget Sound region with its friendly and knowledgeable staff and wide variety of plants, pots, gifts, and home and garden goods.
In addition to its products, Watson's has long been a resource for people looking for home inspiration or wanting to learn about gardening, landscaping, and home décor, with lots of online content and famously approachable staff. Their blog is written by the Watson's team in response to customer questions and current trends. It has recently featured articles on planting a smoothie herb container garden, kid-friendly plants, and perfect plants for a home office. On the blog, you'll find the same practical guidance and savvy opinions that have made Watson's famous over the years.
The new location, located on Military Road at 320th St., just east of I-5, expands access to Watson's for its central Puget Sound fans. Easier to get to (and easy to spend time in), it's smaller than the Puyallup store, but it features the same bountiful variety of indoor and outdoor plants, pots, and gardening accessories. It also has a spectacular selection of gift items, such as delicious caramels and gourmet food items, Michel Design Works hand soaps, and cookbooks like Dishing Up Washington, written by local author Jess Thomson.
And get this: The new store features an Arrangement Bar where you can buy your new plants and pots in store and get them potted by the Watson's staff. If you can't decide, let the in-store experts design a planted container for you.
Watson's also seems to understand that not everyone has the same access to a huge garden space. The store offers advice—and plants—and pots!—for container gardening in small spaces, as well as for home offices and other indoor gardening needs.
As for plant selection, the plants at Watson's range from the common to the rare and trending, and they are perfect for the Northwest climate and any level of gardening know-how. They have your popular hoyas and pothos and Watson's grown geraniums, as well as hostas, philodendrons, and rhododendrons, in case you've been inspired by Federal Way's Rhododendron Garden. And there are so many more, too! Suffice it to say: Watson's has what you want, even if you're not quite sure yet what you want.
Part of the fun of visiting Watson's is the experience. It's the kind of place where conversations just bubble up out of nowhere, where friends bump into one another, and where the staff lights up when you tell them about the forsaken nook that needs brightening.
One thing the store makes abundantly clear: Watson's isn't just about plants; it's about living. It's a fun and inviting place you visit for ideas and inspiration for your home, as well as plants and pots galore.
Some popular plants and thoughtful gifts that staff recommend to KOMO readers include:
- Candles, diffusers, and scented sprays are an awesome way to layer similar scents, emphasize a particular season, and create a signature fragrance for a home.
- Indoor pottery paired with a selection of succulents are the perfect addition to a side table, kitchen windowsill, or the center of a table. Pair a floor standing pot with a larger houseplant for a little something unexpected in your family room, bedroom, or home office.
- A Watson's Grown Red Calliope geranium basket is one of those items that you can never go wrong with, whether it's a gift or a pop of color for your yard!
