Artist of the Week: Christy Hopkins

Christy Hopkins is a Seattle-based artist and painter.

Seattle Refined: How long have you been creating? What mediums do you work with?
Christy Hopkins: I've been painting for over 20 years and use mostly acrylic paint. I also use oil pastels, ink and acrylic markers in my process.

Can you tell us about your artistic process and how the different stages work into it?
My process is what makes my art unique. I'm an intuitive painter, so I go in with no roadmap. The design and composition emerge as I build layers. Most of my work consists of 5-10 layers, and this is the process that allows me to be free in my expression. My work directly reflects my energy, along with my color palettes which are bold and vibrant.

Tell us about where your inspiration for your art comes from.
I draw inspiration from the work itself while I'm actually in it. It's the process that makes me come alive to create. Music is always playing, and often the music and dance will affect a piece.

What experiences in your life have affected your art the most?
The experiences that have affected my art most is growing up around a very creative family. We always had music on and had musical instruments we all played. Art is part of who I am as a person.

If we want to see more of your work, where should we go to find it?
More of my art can be viewed on my website, christyhopkinsart.com or Instagram @christyhopkins_art.

What is next for you? Anything you're working on right now that you're really excited about?
I will also be in upcoming Seattle shows and around the west coast. I offer an in-house studio visit here at my Leschi home studio by appointment.

Lastly, how do you take your coffee? (We ask everyone!)
I love my coffee with cream and sugar!
