Falling in love with fall's beauty trends

As summer sunshine fades and the days get darker, so do the beauty trends for fall 2014. Filling us in on the must-know looks for the season is Nordstrom's Beauty Trend Editor, Kate Fannin.

Transporting New York Fashion Week's trends to Seattle can be hard between the cities two different vibes - and Fannin's goal is to make sure the makeup trends align with the new fashion.

"We want a head to toe look," Fannin said. "Our beauty should accent what the fashion is doing."

Words that sum up this fall's beauty trends? Dark, dramatic, futuristic and feminine.

"Makeup should be fun! It should never be a chore," said Fannin. "Everyday is a new day to reinvent yourself, so why not do it with makeup?"

When makeup shopping this fall, think metallic colors, pewtering and layering. Two must-know eye shade trends are Smokey Cocoa and Kohl Halo.

Smokey Cocoa is made up of light to rich brown colors, perfect for anything from the office to the after-work happy hour. Kohl Halo is deeper, darker grays and charcoal powders that intensify the overall look for a nighttime feel.

Scared of going too dark? Fannin says the fad is still great for everyone.

"If you're scared, go with a lighter Smokey Cocoa or a simple, defined waterline," she said. "It doesn't matter if your 25 or 65, it's your interpretation of the trend. There's a variety of ways to do that, whether you're more moderate or all the way to trendy."

Dramatic, velvet-berry, and satin texture is the way to go this fall for your kisser.

Everything from rubies to berries, intensity and pigmentation, regardless of skin tone, anyone can wear these colors. Need to amp it up for the night or a date? Tapping gold on your lips will be the newest thing to do.

"[Light cheeks] counter balance the strong, masculine apparel and trends we see," said Fannin.

She suggests light dusting on the cheeks with YSL Cream de Blush - and adding light lash extensions to act more as a frame to offset the new, modern smoky eye.

Sleek ponytails and intentional-messy updos are what you will be seeing on and off the runway. Dry shampoo and dry texturizers will be essential products that will make styling easier and save time!

Even though hair and makeup have updated their trends, Fannin reiterated the most important accessory with all these trends.

"Overall, no matter, what beautiful skin is always in. It's all about having gorgeous, glowing skin," she said.

So go ahead - we're giving you permission. Time to shop!
