The original corndog hails from Rockaway Beach, Oregon. It’s true. And you can visit the place that started it all: Pronto Pup. (Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
Way back in the late 1930s, beachgoers in search of a summer snack headed to a small hotdog stand on the sand run by husband-and-wife team George and Versa Boyington. (Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
According to Pronto Pup’s website, the couple hit a snag on Labor Day weekend in 1939 when a sudden storm blew in ruining his fresh stack of hot dog buns. (Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
With food in high demand from locals and tourists, George scrambled to think of a way to use the buns quicker so the rain situation wouldn’t happen again. The Original Hot Dog on a Stick was born. Pronto Pups are plump and tasty hot dogs, coated with special batter and deep-fried to a golden brown.{ }(Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
If it’s not enough that Oregon is the birthplace of the corndog, Pronto Pup also boasts having the World's First Riding{ }Mechanical Corndog. (Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
For a few quarters, saddle up on the corndog that made carnival and amusement park food history. The restaurant is currently only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays each week. (Rachael Jones / Seattle Refined)
