'Just really good food' keeps PICK-QUICK popular after 73 years

At PICK-QUICK Drive-In, they know that sometimes the simplest things are the most delicious.

"It's just really good food. It's not complicated. It's not trying to do something crazy. It's just good food," one customer said.

"It's just the simplicity of it. Just a simple cheeseburger and you really taste the ingredients," said another customer as he waited for his order.

PICK-QUICK has been a western Washington staple for more than 70 years.

"We're a mom-and-pop burger shop. We use fresh, local ingredients. We're cooked to order burgers," said Broderick Herron, a partner in PICK-QUICK's Auburn and SODO locations along with his brother, Bradford.

The original PICK-QUICK in Fife opened back in 1949, more than a decade before McDonald's made its way to the region.

"PICK-QUICK was originally opened in 1949 [by Jay Adolph and Henriette Olsen]. At the time, there weren't a lot of burger stands in the Seattle area," Bradford said. "They were blazing the trail as far as the drive-thru, the whole thing of just coming and getting a burger."

Now, two families are keeping that tradition alive. The Burgi family owns the Fife location, while Brad and Janice Herron and their two sons, Broderick and Bradford, are running the show in Auburn and SODO.

"When you come here, it's like your mom is making your burger for you because it's my mom making your burger. It's my dad making your burger. It's me and my brother making your shakes, greeting you at the window. So, for us, the family aspect of the business is super important. It makes everyone feel like they're welcomed," said Broderick.

The menu at PICK-QUICK is all about high-quality classics — think burgers, hot dogs, fries and hand mixed shakes made with real ice cream.

"Everything we do here is made to order. So, literally, when you make your order, your French fries are raw, your burger is raw. We're dropping it and we're cooking it right at that time. It takes a little longer, but that's what our guests have come to expect," said Brad.

"We have a saying here: good food takes time. So, it's going to take a little bit of time, but it's going to be some of the best food you'll ever have," added Broderick.

Of course, there's one menu item at PICK-QUICK that's a long-time customer favorite: the double deluxe burger.

"That's our go-to. It's two patties, American cheese, PICK-QUICK Sauce, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and your choice of fresh or grilled onions. Definitely the top seller, for sure. My favorite as well," said Broderick.

It's a simple burger, done the right way. There's something special about that.
