Local sausage business makes a big impact in the community

For more than three decades, local businessman Danny House has been selling sausages as Dan the Sausageman. As his business has grown, House has found ways to continually give back to the Burien community that has supported him. In fact, the company's mission statement is "give more than you get."

In addition to offering a neighborhood discount at the local farmers market, Dan the Sausageman donates to scholarships, charities, and events.

TinShip scholarship

The TinShip scholarship is offered by the Tin Room Bar & Restaurant and other patrons, including Dan the Sausageman. It is for students who plan to attend an accredited trade school and pursue a career in mechanics, building, machinery, or craftsmanship. The scholarship honors those who work with their hands in a time when a fast-paced, technology-driven society might overlook their skills.

"In creating this scholarship, hope we are honoring these important jobs in our community," according to the scholarship description. "We envision this 'Tin Ship' growing with the support and involvement of our community, our schools and our scholarship recipients."

Graduating seniors who attend Highline public schools are eligible for the scholarship.

Burien Brat Trot

The Burien Brat Trot is a 5k run that supports the work of public schools.

"For countless years, the Burien Brat Trot has been a fun event for all ages, in support of the Highline Schools Foundation," according to the race description.

Dan the Sausageman is a founding organizer of this event that the whole community can participate in, whether by running in the 5k or 1k kids' fun run or by enjoying the Bavarian Fest, a street party that features live entertainment, food, and children's activities.

Neighborhood cleanups

Dan the Sausageman is proud of the community, which is why, during the warm months, the company regularly takes part in neighborhood cleanups by picking up trash in downtown Burien.

Holiday celebration and food drive

An annual holiday event hosted by Dan the Sausageman and the Tin Room offers free Santa photos, a food drive, and an artisan gift market.

Attendees can bring donations of money, shelf-stable food, hygiene items, and baby items for the Highline Area Food Bank.

The gift market supports local artisans and craftspeople and is a chance to buy holiday treats and gifts. Past markets have included vendors selling cards and photo ornaments, blown glass art, small-batch candles, natural cosmetics, curated clothing and home goods, resin gifts, alfajor cookies, baked goods inspired by the British Isles, local and natural jams, artful houseplants and d├ęcor and, of course, gourmet food gift boxes from Dan the Sausageman.

Fundraiser support

Dan the Sausageman supports the community in myriad other ways, including donating prizes and auction items to local nonprofits like the Burien C.A.R.E.S. animal shelter, the Multi-Service Center that fights poverty, and the Environmental Science Center that promotes environmental stewardship through education.
