What’s in Seattle’s backyard? What we've discovered may surprise you!

Eat, play, and explore in Seattle Southside—a happenin’ hub wedged between the urban attractions of downtown and the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

Three cities south of Seattle (SeaTac, Tukwila, and Des Moines) offers historic botanical gardens, more than five million square feet of shopping, and miles of shoreline.

Whether you want a relaxing beach getaway over the summer, an adventure-filled weekend of indoor skydiving, or an intellectual day of visiting world-renowned museums, your personal tour guides at the Seattle Southside Regional Tourism Authority can plan a trip perfect for you!

While you can visit the Seattle Southside Regional Tourism Authority’s website for itineraries, we’ve compiled a few destinations worth checking out on your trip to the South (the Southside, that is).

The Museum of Flight

Enjoy the wonder of flight in one of Seattle’s most spectacular settings. The Museum of Flight is the largest independent, non-profit air and space museum in the world! The 15-acre campus features over 175 air and spacecraft, as well as the original Boeing Aircraft factory, flight simulators, fantastic 3D aviation and space movies, and dozens of fun, interactive exhibits and family activities.

When you visit you can climb aboard the supersonic Concorde, the only full-scale NASA Space Shuttle Trainer, the beautiful Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and the Air Force One that served presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Stand in the shadow of the infamous M-21 Blackbird spy plane—the fastest aircraft ever flown. After touring the galleries, you can enjoy a meal at Wings Café or relax on the airport patio and take in all of the runway action.

Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden

Explore the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden, blooming with plants that were physically moved to prevent their demolition during the expansion of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It’s a one-of-a-kind location that was created to preserve some of the area’s most treasured gardens.

The botanical garden has seven different sections, featuring plantings designed to stimulate all of your senses, four waterfalls, and a Japanese garden with beautiful stonework and ponds.

Des Moines Beach Park

If you love the water, outdoor activities, and delicious seafood, add Des Moines Beach to your Seattle Southside itinerary. Enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking, scuba diving, historic trail and art walks, and beach combing all while enjoying stunning views of the Olympic Mountains.

And did we mention the nearby restaurants? Seattle Southside is known for its booming international dining scene as well as lots of fresh seafood.

The Westfield Southcenter

Calling all shopaholics: The Westfield Southcenter is one of the largest retail destinations in the Pacific Northwest. With more than 225 retailers, you’ll be sure to find offers, deals, and discounts you can’t find anywhere else!

Once you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve dropped, enjoy dinner and a movie at the theater and one of the many restaurants attached to the mall.
