Let's Go Places: Sail across the Sound to Vashon Island

Island life sure is something magical. The pace is slow, the people are relaxed, the views are breathtaking—you can’t ask for much more.

And luckily for us Seattleites, we have a little piece of paradise right in our backyard. That’s right: Vashon Island, known as the “Heart of the Sound,” is filled with gorgeous beaches, delightful restaurants, incredible hiking trails, quaint shops, and gram-worthy nature (if a bike is in the tree, it still counts as natureright?).

Vashon Island, home to adorable sheepdogs and cozy lodges, is only a short ferry ride away. In fact, the ferry is the only way to get to Vashon Island.

So, we hopped in the 2019 Toyota Tacoma (and then jumped on the ferry) for the ultimate off-roading adventure. Why choose the Tacoma? It’s the best-selling mid-size pickup truck for 11 years (and counting).

Here’s what you need to know about this unmistakably athletic and supremely stylish vehicle.

Powerful performance, impressive off-road capability.

The Tacoma’s available 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine or 3.5-liter, V6 engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission on the TRD Sport, providing the perfect blend of efficiency and power.

To optimize your weekend adventures, the TRD Off-Road has a Multi-Terrain Select system that allows the driver to choose between various settings for different types of terrain such as dirt, loose rock, mud, and sand. Each input regulates wheel spin by adjusting throttle and brake pressure to provide maximum traction on almost any surface. Even better? The system helps regulate wheelspin by automatically adjusting the engine throttle and traction control—so you have nothing to worry about except having fun.

And, all Tacoma models are equipped with double wishbone coil-spring front suspension and leaf spring rear suspension with staggered outboard-mounted gas shocks. These are designed to provide more ground clearance, more travel, maximum damping, and fade-free performance. In other words? This suspension helps smooth out the rough stuff.

The impressive array of off-road technology continues with: Locking Rear Differential, which distributes engine power evenly to both rear wheels so they move at the same speed, providing more grip in low-traction conditions; Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) which minimizes the chance of your Tacoma rolling backward on hills; and CRAWL Control, which automatically modulates the throttle and brakes on five low-speed settings so you can focus on navigating difficult terrain (towing up to 3,500 pounds when equipped with the 4-cylinder engine and 6,800 pounds with the V6).

Bold style, everyday functionality, and peace of mind for the journey ahead.

The Tacoma is built to handle the demands of a hard-charging weekend, while still featuring soft-touch material to boost your comfort.

From a design standpoint, the Tacoma’s chiseled face is anchored by a bold, hexagonal grille and a tall, muscular hood. The tailgate has an easy-lowering feature, which allows it to retract slowly to prevent it from slamming down.

Just because it’s tough, doesn’t mean this truck isn’t comfortable. As a Double Cab model, it features 60/40 split rear seats with adjustable headrests and under-seat storage. Other premium features include: available dual-zone automatic climate control, so you and your passenger can stay comfortable; leather-trimmed heated front seats to keep you warm in the coldest of weather; Entune Premium JBL audio with integrated navigation; Qi-compatible wireless smartphone and mobile device charging; and two standard USB ports to keep your other devices charged while on the go.

Tacoma models are equipped with standard Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), an advanced integration of safety technologies, which includes: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Sway Warning System (SWS), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).

Every Tacoma also has driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag Systems, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and front and rear Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags.

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma comes in six models (SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro) and starts at $22,550. The TRD Off-Road model (shown here) is $41,820.
