Bend, Oregon is known as "The Outdoor Playground of the West" for good reason! (Nate Wyeth/Visit Bend)

Kids big and small love to play in Bend, Oregon

There are a million ways to play in Bend, Oregon (they don't call it "The Outdoor Playground of the West" for nothing!).

Whether you're seeking out world-class river activities, hiking, biking, or trail running on Bend's cutting-edge Urban Trail System, a living history trip to the High Desert Museum, or just enjoying the vibrant energy of a hip city, people from around the world visit this mountain town to connect with their loved ones in the great outdoors.

The Seattle Refined team went to Bend to build an adventure from our family to yourscheck out a few of our favorite family-friendly spots below!

(Psst! Want to win a vacation for four to Bend? Click here for details!)

1.Mt. Bachelor. A trip to Bend wouldn't be complete without a day of snow-filled fun. Mt. Bachelor (or as the locals call it, "The Mountain") is one of the six biggest ski areas in the United States, but they don't get the crowds that most of the other biggies do, so you're free to ski and ride Mt. Bachelor with tons of room. There are more than 4,000 skiable areas, 3,365 feet of vertical drop, and 101 runs to explore.

New to skiing? No worries. During the core part of the winter season, ski lessons are available every day for adults and kids (why not start 'em young?). Once you're ready for a ski break, be sure to check out the snow tubing and dog sledding. Better yet, just hang out at the off-leash dog park and watch puppies play in the snow.

2.Jackson's Corner. Nestled deep in Bend's west side, Jackson's Corner is the go-to spot for tasty treats (they serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and insanely good lattes). Best part? Everything they serve is made in-house, and the ingredients are locally and organically sourced whenever possible, even for the kid's menu. They don't do this to be "trendy," but because they actually believe it's possible for a sustainable food system to exist! And boy, you can really taste the difference.

While of course you can try this local favorite for any meal or even a local brew, Jackson's Corner offers a killer brunch menu (yep, even for kids!). We hear the Green Eggs (and the kid's version, Eggs N' Bakey) is to die for. Our crew stopped at the Westside location for dinner (and may or may not have devoured homemade pizza, pasta, and bread), but Jackson's Corner has a second location on the Eastside.

3.The Pavilion. 'Tis the season to be freezin'! The Pavilion is Central Oregon's only NHL-size ice rink that hosts league hockey, curling, skate lessons, and open skating to the public. Grab the kids, rent some skates, and slide, glide, twirl, or curl together (check out half-price skate nights). And be sure to check out The Pavilion's schedule for all things ice sports. When you're done, warm up by the outdoor fire pit with a cup of hot chocolate.
