Flying is a part of almost all our lives but honestly it has become uncomfortable and a huge hassle. Make flying comfortable and healthy so your next trip is a blast instead of a drag. Being able to see different parts of the world is exciting but the actual flying portion can be stressful for our bodies and emotions. Compression socks are amazing and work best on longer flights. They keep your feet warm and help increase circulation while also decreasing swelling. Additionally, the compression from the socks can also help decrease the chances of developing a blood clot which is a real concern on exceptionally long flights. Compression socks can also be used to help combat muscle fatigue and have been known to help with Restless Leg Syndrome. Get up periodically and move. Try to move a bit every 30 minutes or so. Take a quick walk to the bathroom, freshen up and then head back to your seat. If you can, throw in a bit of stretching to loosen up your tight muscles. Do yoga in your airplane seat to further stretch your body. Yoga with Adriene has a great video for airplane yoga.
Flying is dehydrating. And most of us forget to bring our own water on the plane so we are stuck waiting for a tiny cup of liquid from the flight attendants. Bring your own, empty bottle in your carry-on luggage and fill it to the brim. Bring two giant bottles for longer flights. Most airports have filling stations nowadays with cold water or you can find somewhere to purchase a big bottle of water. Then once you are on the plane, drink up! Don’t worry about having to use the facilities too much as that means you are moving! Hydration is super important and will help keep your body from swelling too much while in the air. Drink up even if you don’t feel terribly thirsty.
Along with drinking water, sip on herbal, non caffeinated teas or hot water with lemon while flying the friendly skies. Fill a thermos with hot water before getting on the plane or ask the flight attendants for some hot water and dunk your favorite tea bag for a nice treat. Warm liquids are also great for the digestive system.
NOISE-CANCELLING HEADPHONES (OR EAR PLUGS)
The constant drone of the airplane engine can slowly drive you mad on long flights. Noise-canceling headphones or even just ear plugs can help reduce the noise around you from the airplane to your seat mates. Try to buy the best you can afford.
Essential oils can be applied topically to help with the trails of travel. Put a drop of peppermint on your temples to reduce headaches. Lavender on the wrist and neck will help relax and lull you to sleep. Kiehl’s Cactus Flowers & “Tibetan Ginseng” Hydrating Mist is great to spray on your face during a bathroom break. Bring along a lightly scented heavy duty lotion to keep your hands soft throughout the flight. Don’t forget the lip balm!
Pack a few travel accessories for ideal comfort. Travel pillows may look funny but are a godsend when trapped in a middle seat on a long flight. They’ll help prevent horrible neck aches. Throw a nice scarf in your bag to double as a cozy blanket on cold flights. Bring along an eye mask to block out your seat mate’s reading light and allow you to catch a few zzz’s.
The best way to ensure a comfortable flight is to bring along your favorite entertainment from a good book (Refined Reads always has great ideas) to an iPad filled with your favorite movies or podcasts. Plan ahead with your entertainment so you have something to look forward to instead of being stuck with in-flight movie options.
This tip might not be for everyone but it is worth a try. Let’s face it, eating on the plane can sometimes just be a source of entertainment, not a source of fuel. However for many people, eating while hurtling through the air can cause constipation and mess with your circadian rhythms. Fasting can also help with jet lag. Knowing when to eat and sleep are two things that are thrown out of whack while traveling. Intermittent fasting can help your body with increased energy and better circulation while also stabilizing your metabolism. Fasting while flying means your body can take a break from digestion. Once you land, grab something healthy to eat and wake up your digestion.
Traveling requires a lot of patience. Keep your expectations low and practice patience. There will be flight delays, lost luggage and rude passengers to deal with. Packing some patience will go a long way toward a comfortable flight.
