Calling all sports fans! Did you know there are sporting events for the whole family just minutes from downtown Seattle? Whether you’re looking to dive into the action or cheer from the stands, in Seattle Southside (the cities of Tukwila, Des Moines, and SeaTac) there are plenty of opportunities to indulge your competitive side.
Catch the Seawolves, Seattle’s premier rugby team, tee up at a historic golf course along the Duwamish River, take a peek at some underwater friends while scuba diving along a thriving artificial reef, or go for a date night and cocktails while challenging your SO to a few rounds of bowling.
We put together some of our own ideas for an action-packed weekend in Seattle Southside. Game on!
Premier League Rugby at Starfire Sports Complex
“Wait?” You may be saying to yourself. “Seattle has a rugby team?” In fact, the Seawolves are Seattle’s brand-spanking new rugby team, and they play at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
The Seawolves inaugural Spring 2018 season is just coming to a close, and they’re heading to the Major League Rugby playoffs as the #2 seed. All home game tickets sold out this year so keep an eye out for tickets next year to catch them in all their glory.
Foster Golf Links
Take in 18 holes in a truly Pacific Northwest course, surrounded by the wandering Duwamish River. Open since 1925, Foster Golf Links was thoroughly renovated in 2004 and boasts a beautiful, rewarding, and fun course.
Even if golf isn’t your pastime of choice, the clubhouse is well worth checking out at the 19th hole. Billy Baroo’s Bar and Grill serves up the best of Northwest cuisine, has a stellar patio overlooking the links, happy hour all week long, and hosts weekly Karaoke Fridays, as well as live jazz and R&B music every Saturday.
Scuba Diving at Saltwater State Park
Where else but Seattle Southside can you get a vibrant marine life so close to the urban sprawl? Swim in the Sound at Saltwater State Park; a premier urban diver’s destination. It is the only state park in Washington with an artificial reef for diving. The reef is a protected marine sanctuary and has encouraged the proliferation of several local varieties of rockfish, crabs, and sculpins.
If you’re not PADI certified, no worries! The surrounding beach and tidelands can give you a good taste for exploring the coastal Puget Sound. Or if you’re feeling really adventurous, check out Seattle Dive Tours for fully-guided dives.
Looking for some fun for the kids or a creative date night idea? ACME Bowl isn’t your average bowling alley. They’ve also got shuffleboard, billiards, and an arcade.
Keep an eye out for promos throughout the week like free rounds of bowling and food and drink specials at their upscale sports bar, The Break Room. Happy hours feature $7 fish bowls that are sure to improve your bowling game… right?
