5 ways to unwind on the Tillamook Coast

Oh, September. That month when summer officially ends and we’re reminded just how busy we are. Between back to school, back to sports, work meetings, PTA meetings, cooking dinner, getting everyone out the door, even getting yourself out the door, it’s no wonder we’re all wiped by the end of the week.

We have a suggestion to regain some of your sanity: visit the Tillamook Coast in Oregon. It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind and disconnect from the craziness of everyday life. Here are a few things you can do during a long weekend (or even better, mid-week) getaway.

1. Do yoga.

There are several studios along the Tillamook Coast, including Yoga Roots Studio in Manzanita, with classes designed for every level of yogi. If you’re comfortable on the mat, head out to the beach, pick a quiet spot and start on those sun salutations. Remember that the weather on the coast can be unpredictable, so bring plenty of layers and sun protection.

2. Go for a walk.

Get your heart pumping with a stroll along the beach or through one of the quaint seaside towns. Window-shop, watch the waves roll in, or people-watch. Whether one mile or seven, a good walk will get those endorphins flowing and boost your mood. Both Kilchis Point Reserve in Bay City and Nestucca Bay Wildlife Refuge near Pacific City have several trails filled with wildlife, greenery and beautiful sites that will make you forget the rest of the world.

3. Write in a journal.

There’s no better way to free your mind than by putting your thoughts down on paper. Write what you’re grateful for, what you’ve accomplished, or what you’re hoping for in the next year. Here’s the key: don’t reread what you just wrote right away. When you’re done writing, put the journal down and do one of the other things on the list. You can always come back to your entry and add to it.

4. Read a book.

Pick a café, a piece of driftwood, or stay in the hotel bed (we hear the Inn at Manzanita and Inn at Cape Kiwanda have very comfy beds!) and catch up on the book that’s been on your nightstand for months. If you’re looking to stretch your mind, pick a book you wouldn’t normally read, like a historical novel or a biography on someone you’re not familiar with (but we promise not to judge if you really just want to read 50 Shades of Grey.) If you forgot your book or are just in need of a suggestion, check out Cloud and Leaf Bookstore in Manzanita.

5. Unplug.

This one should go without saying, but lay off the phone and computer for a few days. It’s great to snap gorgeous photos of the coastline, but maybe hold off on posting them until you get back, so you’re not constantly looking to see who commented on your photos. This getaway is about you, not about what others think about you. The emails and likes will still be there when you get home.
