Washington Waterfront Home Tour: Vast estate marries natural beauty with luxury living

This 12,000-square-foot home on Birch Bay is magnificent, but those who appreciate Washington’s natural beauty might well find the property surrounding it even more stupendous.

The 65.76-private acres include waterfront, rolling hillsides and private forest. Eagles, deer and other wildlife native to the Pacific Northwest roam freely about the property, while the waters of the Strait afford world-class crabbing, clamming and fishing. A spring-fed pond is perfect for paddle boarding or canoeing, pristine gardens surround the home and an orchard with plum, apple and pear trees bears sweet fruit.

A stone gazebo from Italy overlooking the pond and a striking Italian fountain in the front anchor the landscaping. Entering the home means encountering even more extraordinary features.

Craftsman-cut Brazilian Cherrywood hardwood floors run throughout the main level. The formal living room features French doors that open onto the patio and a custom-carved wood mantle framing a gas fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows wash the room in light.

The family room also has French doors, but its fireplace is wood-burning and custom book and media built-ins keep your favorites books, movies and music close at hand. Built-in speakers and high-tech wiring throughout the home allow you to enjoy your music wherever your tasks take you.

If you work from home, you’ll love the main office complete with a boardroom and if someone else in your family works from home, they can work in the second office. No more trying to tune out someone else’s phone calls – everyone can get right to business in these two elegant spaces.

The eat-in kitchen stars a vast island and the best appliances available. Cook on an 8-burner Wolf gas stovetop, prep food on the slab granite counters and keep food cold in one of two Subzero wood-faced refrigerators. There’s also a separate room off the kitchen with pantry space and additional freezer space.

Once you’ve made your meal, you have several choices concerning where to eat it. Use the eight-person informal dining area, serve your culinary creations in the formal dining room, or dine al fresco on the easily accessible outdoor patio and enjoy water views along with your meal.

If you prefer, you can also do your cooking in the fully equipped outdoor kitchen. Make use of the Thermador gas range, stainless steel counters, refrigerator and built-in BBQ area while entertaining or cooking up the day’s catch.

When it’s time to retire, escape to the spacious master bedroom with water views and a stunning fireplace. A large his-and-hers walk-in closet contains a washer and dryer to make doing laundry easy and convenient. The en-suite bathroom features a jetted soaking tub, a walk-in spa steam shower, dual sinks, a built-in makeup vanity, a fireplace and separate water closet.

A second master suit features a Carrara marble fireplace from Italy, a private balcony and its own en-suite bathroom, and the third and fourth bedroom also have private balconies, en-suite bathrooms and water views. Whether you have a big family or love house guests, everyone can sleep comfortably in these roomy bedrooms.

Special Extras

Additional spaces in the home include a state-of-the-art home theater, a fitness room, a crafting studio, a cedar-lined dry sauna and a wine cave with space for over 1,000 bottles (plus spare room to install even more).

A lounge / club room contains a full bar with a beverage tap, two refrigerators and a dishwasher, and one especially unique feature: the black-walnut statues at the entrance to the room are from the RMS Olympic. This trans-Atlantic ocean liner built in 1908 was one of a trio that included the Britannic and the Titanic.

This home isn’t only luxurious – it’s graceful. Special touches like window seats and built-in display cabinets add charm and personality while balancing out the majesty of the estate. There’s also a separate caretaker’s apartment above the garage with sweeping views of Bich Bay.

For the nature-lover though, the best feature is the sprawling patios that dissolve the division between the indoor living space and the natural beauty of coastal Washington.
