Welcome to the Season of the Geek!
Northwest summer means getting out to enjoy the sun breaks as much as possible, but you can bathe in the geek glow and shine in your cosplay best at these top picks for nerdy fun. From movies to comic book events to cons, here are some geek events worth heading indoors for.
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson sparkled with chemistry in "Thor: Ragnarok". The stars hung up their hammers and swords but kept the muscles and biting wit. The two suit up in this continuation of the alien-hunting comedy action franchise based on the comic book. In theaters starting June 14, 2019.
You know Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman. What makes a great hero is an awesome enemy! DC Comics turns everything upside down when evil wins. The summer event pits the Justice League against the Legion of Doom, Batman vs Bane and Superman in a mystery wrapping nearly everyone in the DC Universe in its grip (prelude in comic book shops now and through the summer in multiple books).
The homegrown con gets even bigger with comic book legends and Hollywood royalty! Billy Dee Williams (Lando from "Star Wars"); Kristian Nairn (Hodor from "Game of Thrones") Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma Simmons from Marvel’s "Agents of SHIELD") are among the cast of celebrities you can meet. You may remember Carl Weathers from Rocky films but he’s part of the highly anticipated Star Wars show "The Mandalorian". He’ll head to Puyallup to meet fans before going to a galaxy far, far away.
DC Creative Director and superstar artist Jim Lee will be making a rare appearance. Influential artist Jim Steranko, legendary writer Roy Thomas, the editor Stan Lee chose to be his first successor at Marvel Comics. Epic X-Men writer Chris Claremont and more artists and writers will be there to sign books and wow fans. Attractions you can see and pose with include the 1966 Batmobile, the DeLorean Time Machine from "Back to the Future" and the Impala from "Supernatural". Washing State Summer Con runs from June 15-16 at Washington State Fair and Convention Center in Puyallup.
A killer doll! Yes, a killer doll is the loose again. In the guiltiest pleasure/nostalgia category comes the rebirth/remake of the film that inspired 6 sequels! You may or may not know that Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker from "Star Wars") is one of the great voice actors in history particular for his portrayal of The Joker in the Batman animated series. Hamill gives voice to the comeback of Chucky, the creepy doll possessed by the soul of a killer. Aubrey Plaza plays the mom of the boy who gets the doll from hell. Film comes out on June 21.
"Avengers: Endgame" - you know that blockbuster conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that made you cheer and maybe cry? Well, Ace brings cast members of summer’s biggest flick to the Emerald City. Chris Evans (Captain America) Josh Brolin (Thanos) Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Don Cheadle (War Machine) will wow fans. The geek movie Queen MVP has to be Zoe Saldana (Gamora from Marvel movies, Uhura from "Star Trek" films and A"vatar") will hold court too as fans get to see a gallery of superstars. ACE Comic Con will run June 28-30 at WAMU Theater and CenturyLink Field Event Center.
So how big is this? The X-Men comic book line will be cancelled. One of the biggest writers in comics will launch the next big milestone for fans of mutant heroes. Jonathan Hickman already wrote legendary runs of "Fantastic Four" and "The Avengers". Now he’s back with House of X #1 and Powers of X #1. Details are very hush, hush but these are THE Marvel books of summer. Expect comics in store in July.
What happens to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after "Avengers: Endgame"? He goes on vacation and swings into trouble with new villains and a mystery man (Jake Gyllenhaal) named Mysterio? Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits Parker and we get to see even more cool new Spidey suits. Available on July 2.
The publisher that gave us Spider-Man, Avengers, Hulk, X-Men and so many more is celebrating its 80th anniversary! Fans get the gift of this mega issue with the greatest talent ever assembled (80 creative teams!) for tons of stories celebrating the 80-decade legacy. Expect August in comic book shops.
The Penny Arcade Expo celebrates gaming culture with tabletop, arcade and video gaming. This is THE place for the latest games, tournaments along with concerts and cosplay. There’s even an Omegathon – a mega-tournament spanning the entire run of the four-day event. PAX runs from August 30- September 2 at the Washington State Convention Center.
Two - count ‘em - two Doctor Whos! Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor) and Christopher Eccleston (The Nine Doctor making his first U.S. con appearance ever) will light up Rose City. Bonnie Wright and Matthew Lewis from the Harry Potter series will be magical. Fans of the "The Princess Bride" will love seeing Cary Elwes, Chris Sarandon and Wallace. “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again” as Tim Curry of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" greets fans along with a cast of comic book creators. Rose City Comic Con runs from September 13 through the 15 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.
Whether you are a hard core geek or a casual geek - there's a reason to hit the cinema, shop or con to let your geek flag fly for a summer escape. Enjoy!
