The best places to see The Nutcracker in Seattle

Attending the Nutcracker ballet is a holiday tradition. Seattle is lucky to offer a wide variety of shows and experiences - from the traditional Pacific Northwest Ballet to shorter shows with local dance schools. Seattle Refined has rounded up 10 of our favorite Nutcracker performances so you can pick out your favorite or attempt to see them all this holiday season.

Pacific Northwest Ballet

This is the third year for the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s production featuring the choreography of George Balanchine with sets and costumes designed by Ian Falconer (creator of Olive the Pig). While visions of sugar plums dance on the stage, theatergoers will be dazzled by the 40 foot tall Christmas tree, more than 30 cubic feet of snow and the 154 different costumes. Chihuly’s Winter Star makes a dazzling appearance at the end of Act 1. Make sure to pre-order intermission treats before the show starts or for the deluxe Nutcracker experience, purchase The Nutcracker Suites for an additional $30 which includes a Trophy Cupcake sprinkle station, swords and crowns for snap-your-own photos, a holiday appetizer buffet along with coffee and champagne. The Nutcracker ballet runs November 24 through December 28, 2017 with tickets starting at $29.

ARC School of Ballet

Community favorite, ARC School of Ballet is once again featuring their Nutcracker Sweets production. Designed to appeal to younger audiences, Nutcracker Sweets runs approximately an hour and showcases the talents of the school’s students along with dancers of The ARC Dance Company. Small children are invited to sit up front on the floor to better see the action up close. Everyone will be captivated by the magical music, costumes and dancing. Nutcracker Sweets runs December 8-10, 2017 with tickets starting at $15.

DASS Dance School

This ballet show offers double duty to the efficient holiday goer. Meet Santa Claus (bring your camera) while DASSdance leaps and piles to the story of The Nutcracker. Start with a Continental Breakfast before taking in door prizes, Twisted Balloon Magic and more. This local holiday tradition is not to be missed, especially if you have little ones in your group. Santa Breakfast Mini Nutcracker runs December 10 & 16, 2017 with tickets starting at $20.

Island Youth Ballet

Head to Mercer Island for this all-youth production of “Excerpts from the Nutcracker”. The two-hour show features gorgeous costumes along with spectacular sets and is a cherished tradition. Watch youths as they awaken your imagination and holiday spirt with the Dance of the Snowflakes and transport you to to the Land of the Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy reigns. “Excerpts from the Nutcracker” runs December 9 to December 17th with tickets starting at $33.

Evergreen City Ballet

The Evergreen City Ballet performs their Nutcracker in three different and convenient locations - Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, the Auburn Performing Arts Center and the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center. Come view the perennial family favorite in one of two lengths - the super kid-friendly one-hour performance or the more traditional full-length two-hour production. You’ll be in a treat no matter which performance you choose! Make sure to bring your camera for photo ops with dancers in full costume after the show. International Ballet Theatre

Staged with traditional Russian choreography and paired with exotic Arabian dancers, the International Ballet Theatre presents a version of the Nutcracker for the traditionalists. The cast dazzles with vibrant costumes as they take you on a journey beyond the snow covered forest to the land of sweets. Emerald Ballet Theater

The Emerald Ballet Theater is in their 11th season and feature a full-length Nutcracker show with lavish costumes and exquisite choreography in the Russian tradition along with a live orchestra. Tacoma City Ballet

The Tacoma City Ballet’s production of the original Nutcracker also includes The Tale of the Hard Nut, a story about how a princess breaks the spell of the “Curse of Ugliness” cast by the evil Mouse Queen. The classic tale was first told in Russia in 1892 and continues to captivate audiences today. This is the first year for the Tacoma City Ballet in the new Federal Way Performing Arts & Event Center. The Tacoma City Ballet’s Nutcracker runs December 15 - December 23, 2017 with tickets starting at $18.

Ballet Northwest

Ballet Northwest has brought the Nutcracker to Olympia for over 30 years. This traditional rendition is performed at the Washington Center and features more than 200 dancers from across the community.
