A few years ago, a high school girl was living with her family in a cramped van. She was trying to keep up with her studies, fit in with her friends, and have a normal high school experience.
When the homecoming dance was announced, she knew she wanted to go – but it seemed like an impossible fairy tale. Luckily, her school district’s McKinney-Vento coordinator stepped in to help. The coordinator found her a dress, arranged to make the school locker room available as a place to get ready, and even provided personal hygiene items and makeup from AAA’s Soap for Hope program. The girl was able to go to the dance and have a typical teenage experience, even if just for one night.
Sound like a new version of the classic Cinderella story? Unfortunately, it’s not – this is a true story and one that illustrates the real, daily struggles of our neighbors in need. Luckily, there’s a simple way that you can help make a difference.
Consider donating soap and other personal hygiene items to AAA’s 11th annual Soap for Hope donation drive. All donations will stay in your local community.
Donating is easy; just scan your drawers and cabinets for unused, unopened personal hygiene items and bring them to any AAA store in Washington. Both travel- and full-sized items are welcome, and things like soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, and feminine hygiene products are accepted at all Washington AAA stores through the end of the year.
Here are the two Seattle-based locations:
- AAA Seattle Cruise & Travel – 1523 15th Ave. W
- AAA Washington Insurance Agency – 1700 Westlake Ave N, Suite 724
