In Less Than 10 Weeks You Could Be Ready For One of These 5K Races

If you don’t categorize yourself as an athletic person, welcome to the club. Me neither.

But, once upon a time, I got a hankering to give running a try. And you know what, running - or jogging - turned out to be within reach!

I bet it is for you too. Especially if you give yourself the time and proper training.

From one non-athlete to another, start your running journey by browsing the app store for a 5K training app. Yes, the popular Couch to 5K will do. I used this one. Most anything will work, but best of all, they’re less intense than you might think - just 30 minutes, three times each week for 8-10 weeks.

You can do that, right?

Your first run might be easy. If so, go you! If not, well, I’ve been there. It’s OK - you’re building endurance and it will get easier. You will catch the running bug. You will meet your goal of completing a 5K. And then, before you know it, you’ll be an athlete - a proficient person in physical exercise.

My best advice for sticking with a training program is to choose a “deadline”. In this case, an official race! Once you have a specific race date you have something to work towards. A date will give you the momentum you need to stick with your 3x/week schedule.

In 2-3 months, just 8-10 weeks depending on the program you choose, you’ll be able to jog for 30+ minutes without stopping. Cross my heart it’s true. I’ve done it! I literally couldn’t run for 30 seconds without huffing and puffing and tonight I busted out 5 miles on my treadmill as part of my weekly exercise plan.

Inspiring Hope Run - Mukilteo - May 11, 2019. If cancer has impacted your life, this is the run for you. Register by 2/28/19 to lock in the $25 price.

The Color Run - Seattle - May 12, 2019. I can’t think of a better inaugural run - colors runs are a blast of rainbow fun! Talk about an epic finish line photo!

Girls On the Run Puget Sound 5K - Renton - May 19, 2019. I love the mission behind this organization and if you scroll down on the event page you will see photos of how much fun their annual 5K is.

Seattle Solstice Run - Seattle - June 15, 2019. Get your run on in honor of the longest day of the year! If you feel up to it, train for a longer run because this race will have a 5K, 10K, and 15K option.

Yankee Doodle Dash - Everett - July 4, 2019. Begin your 4th of July festivities with a festive jog! After the awards assembly there will be a free Kiddie Doodle Dash too so plan to bring the whole family.

Anacortes Art Dash - Anacortes - August 3, 2019. I can personally vouch for this course, it’s where I got my PR last year! Straight and easy and you get to hang out in quaint Anacortes so this race is a total win.

Will Run For Beer 5K Series - monthly. Does it sound fun to get a free beer after you log 3.1 miles? Well, register for one Will Run For Beer 5K or register for them all! Every month this series rotates between brewery and restaurant locations so you can log your miles while sipping new brews.
