Getting outside can be amazing and here in the Pacific NW, we have oodles of camping opportunities. The cost for outfitting oneself for that awesome camping trip can be a barrier and then you have to figure out where to store all that gear. City living doesn’t always allow for good storage.
This is where Back40 Outfitters saves the day! The company makes it easy and convenient for outside adventurers to get the right gear for their adventure at a fair price without having to deal with storage or other hassles.
“Instead of a traditional rental shop with set hours, we have a more modern model: order from our website, then pick up the gear from drop boxes with a unique code. When you're done, return the gear to the box - all on your own time, no set hours, no late fees,” said Cara Lommen, Marketing & Communications.
Back40 Outfitters drop boxes are placed outside local breweries, like Two Beers Brewing in Georgetown for convenient pick-up. They also include a coupon to the brewery so customers can snag a six pack or stop for a drink after they drop off their gear while experiencing another local business.
The company started in 2014 after the founder, Drew began camping and backpacking with his family. As he explored more of the Pacific NW, he grew inspired to help more people get outside to explore our incredible natural surroundings.
Back40 Outfitters offers rental gear along with a used gear shop for those who are interested in purchasing their own equipment. The company also offers products for kids from sleeping bags to backpacks sized for children. Rental options range from simple backpacking kits with a backpack, trekking poles, tent, sleeping bag, water filtration system, multi-tool, medical kit and more to the concert camping kit outfitted with tents, air mattresses, camping chairs and a lantern. All rental options start with a package and then allow for add-ons like a kitchen kit or a sun shade.
“We love the idea of families getting out into nature together and building memories. This was one of the reasons we started the company,” said Lommen. “We see a lot of local families who don't have garages or much room to store gear - or don't want to invest the thousands of dollars to get equipped for maybe a few trips a year. With Back 40, they can pick up their kit, hit the road, have an adventure, and then drop it off - no cleaning, storing, or buying!”
Another bonus of renting with Back40 Outfitters is that everything is included so you don’t have to think about what to bring or accidentally forget something important like the tent poles. “The curation we provide - from the type of backpack or tent to including things like can openers or cleaning supplies - makes it so customers can just focus on planning and enjoying their trip,” added Lommen.
The company will help provide instructions for how to set up all the gear, provide recommendations on where to go and answer any and all questions about what gear to rent.
Back40 Outfitters currently serves only Washington state but customers take their gear all over. Orders can be taken on the site at https://www.back40outfitters.co/. They recommend reserving a month or more in advance for the best availability. Big concert weekends at the Gorge do tend to sell out 6-9 months in advance so book early!
