Documenting Love: Kelly & Danny's Story

Welcome to our Documenting Love series where we capture people's love stories through photos and the written word. This may be one of our favorite weekly series! Check out the gallery and read the couples love story below. Keep in mind that we ask the couples to answer the questions separately so we can draw parallels between their experiences and, you know, say a collective, "Ahhhhhhh!" If you or someone you know wants to be featured in this series, please get in touch with us, hello@seattlerefined.com.

Kelly
Danny and I met at work, a digital startup here in Seattle. When I started, he was running the training sessions on all things technology since he built most of it himself (nerd alert!) and everyone referred to him as a genius. My first impression after not understanding a single thing he was describing for an hour was that everyone was right; he was the smartest human being on the planet, but also very patient and super cool.

Danny
Her desk in the office was between my desk and the office printer. I always found a reason to print something off so I could pass by her desk and spend a couple of minutes chatting with her. The company tended to hire young, smart, and ambitious people out of college. I was a software developer and was responsible for some of the software that the sales staff used to setup the ads. I gave her training on the software her first day at the company and the rest is history! :)

Kelly
I'm proud to say that he is ALWAYS the most likable person in the room just by being his genuine self. This is a fact. He's just one of those people! In terms of his accomplishments, he successfully launched, grew, and sold his own start-up company. He worked so hard and diligently and kept very steady emotions throughout. It is something I could never do. I was in awe of his ability even though I had every confidence in the world in him to begin with.

Danny
I'm proud of her determination and motivation in everything she takes on. She's done three Full IronMan's and a whole bunch of Half IronMan's in the last five years. The time it takes to train and dedicate towards those events while working a full time job is incredible and inspirational. She's done all of that while still setting aside time for friends, family, and most importantly us.

Kelly
We were friends and then grew into best friends before falling in love officially, so it's hard to say when exactly I knew I loved him. It was just a gradual movement from wanting to be with him to not wanting to be without him. It did happen fairly quickly though. Within a couple months I knew he was someone truly special in my life.

Danny
People tend to say relationships are hard. I knew I loved Kelly when she made my life easier and never asked me to change who I was. She's never stopped me from doing what I want to do and has always supported me in any life endeavors I've wanted to take on.

Kelly
Most people say relationships are hard work. Our relationship is different in that it has always been easy. Easy to communicate. Easy to compromise. Easy to understand. Easy to respect one another's differences. We are 100% independent and different individuals, but 100% on the same page.

Danny
We were great friends before we started dating. In addition, we were together for 10 years before getting engaged and 13.5 years before getting married. I believe we have a true understanding of each other. Nothing at this point is unknown and there are no secrets or surprises in our relationship. We know what to expect from the other person as well as what not to expect.

We had been together for 10 years and had never been in a rush, so I didn't see the proposal coming at all! We take an annual snowboarding trip to Whistler, BC with a big group of friends in January. We had talked about trying heli-boarding for several years, but had never pulled the trigger. That Christmas, he gifted me with a heliboard trip! I was so pumped that we were actually going to do it! Little did I know, it was all a set up for the proposal. We were suited up for the day in our snowboard gear and took the first helicopter ride to the top of the glacier. Before our first exhilarating run down the glacier, we walked to the edge to take in the absolutely stunning full view from the top. He started with "Well, this is where it all began..." and got down one one knee. I was fogging up my goggles with tears before he could even get the words out. Amazing!

Danny
We have never been in a rush to get married. We lived together, lived our lives as life-long partners, and felt no need to make it official (in the government's eyes). We started dating in Whistler and have been up every year since to snowboard. It was leading up to our 10th anniversary and I started thinking how cool it would be to propose during our Whistler trip. We take the annual trip up with friends each year and Kelly isn't the type of person who loves attention, so I needed to find a special way to do it away from our friends. We had talked in previous years how cool it would be to do a heli-skiing tour in Whistler. There would be no way for me to surprise her day of with the trip, so I ended up giving her the heli-skiing trip for Christmas which was about a month before our trip. She didn't seem to have any clue that it was part of the engagement.

Her sister Kim, who is very important in her life, usually comes up with us during these trips but wasn't on planning on coming up that year since she was pregnant. I tried to convince Kim to come up (without telling her why), but she wasn't getting the hint. I finally told Kim my plan and she agreed to secretly come up. The trip started the same as any of our other previous nine trips, except me being "Nervous Nelly" the whole time - hoping she doesn't accidentally see the ring and that I don't accidentally lose it. The morning of the engagement I was super nervous. I had told the heli-skiing place of my plan, but there was no way for me to talk to the guide to figure out logistics before going up in the helicopter. When we get to the top, the guide tells everyone to take a couple of minutes to wander around and take pictures if we wish. I figured that was my cue and took Kelly over to the mountain ledge privately and asked her to marry me and she thankfully said yes! The guide secretly was taking pictures the whole time which gave us pictures to look back on. We spent the next 6 hours heli-skiing and having the time of our lives.

Kim came up while we were out heli-skiing. During our drive back to the condo, Kelly said she wanted to at least call Kim and tell her before we got back to our friends. I told her we should see our friends real quick and then call family shortly after. As we are being greeted by our friends, Kim and her husband Andy walk down the stairs and surprises Kelly. It was a very special moment! Since we didn't have enough beds for everyone (didn't want Kelly to be suspicious when we booked the place), we gave Kim and Andy our bed that night and we slept on the floor our engagement night.

Kelly
What I love most about Danny is that he's always loved me for exactly who I am, has never tried to change me, and instead, encourages me to be the best version of myself.

Danny
I love that she gets me. She understands who I am, better than I understand myself sometimes. She knows how to support me when I'm low and when to cheer me on. We joke that we are twins in the sense that we know what the other person is thinking without having to say anything.

Kelly
My favorite thing about Danny is that he is 100% selfless and truly one of the smartest human beings on the planet.

Danny
Her dedication, determination, motivation, and drive are my favorite things about her. She is her harshest critic and demands a lot from herself. Failure is just not an option for her.

Kelly
The sexiest thing about him is that he has the greatest calves!

Danny
Based on her looks (and stereotypes) people think she's not very smart. Kelly is one of the smartest people I know. A lot of things that are hard for me come very naturally for her. We always love to see who's smartest watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune when we have a free night together.

Kelly
Some of my favorite traditions include our annual trip to Whistler, of course! But also, here's a funny one...We have a pool at our house. Very rare for Seattle, I know. It is our house rule that on the first 80 degree (or higher) day of the year, we have to jump in the pool. No excuses allowed whatsoever!

Danny
Whistler is a very special place for us. We have been to Whistler 13 straight years to snowboard and have started going up to Whistler once in the summer time to take in all of the fun non-winter activities.
