Documenting Love: Jen & J.P.'s Story

Welcome to our Documenting Love series where we capture people's love stories through photos and the written word. This may be one of our favorite weekly series! Check out the gallery and read the couples love story below. Keep in mind that we ask the couples to answer the questions separately so we can draw parallels between their experiences and, you know, say a collective, "Ahhhhhhh!"

Jen
We met online, so my first memory of J.P was his profile picture. It was a selfie he took in his car and he was wearing a white, backwards hat, a blue tee-shirt, and had a smirk on his face. It was adorable.

My first memory of Jen is when she was standing on the corner of 1st and Pike by the Pike Place Market and had her back leaning on the pillar of a coffee shop. She had a nervous smile but I found it very endearing and pure.

J.P. and I met on OKCupid. I had just about given up on the site after a few weeks of receiving a whole lot of inappropriate propositions, when he messaged me. He stood out to me because: A. He said more than "Hi." B. He asked me about the recent season of a T.V. show we both liked, which told me he actually took the time to READ my profile. And C. He was a complete gentlemen throughout every conversation. When he finally asked me out on a date, he took me to the Pink Door. I was smitten right away. I was so nervous that I couldn't eat and barely touched my food. I felt so bad about him paying for my wasted meal.

Jen and I met on the online dating site OKCupid. I started a conversation by asking her if she’s seen the newest season of the T.V. show The Killing. It was one of the shows that she had listed as one of her favorites so I tried to make a connection with her through it. We exchanged messages for a couple of days and then one night I was up late and started watching Fight Club on the T.V.. I mentioned to her that Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time and that the ending is one of the best movie endings of all time.

I'm so proud of how hard J.P. works to take care of me, as well as his family. He never takes sick days or complains about work.

J.P.
Jen is very passionate about being able to make a difference in the world and in the community, and she does that through video stories, as a producer. She has a big heart for people in need and she always tries to help in any way she can. I’m extremely proud of her for that.

J.P. was the first to say I love you, and when he did I felt the same way. However, (though it may sound strange) I think it truly solidified for me after my dog broke his leg. My dog was in a cast for weeks and required A LOT of care. It was a stressful time. J.P. was so loving and helpful throughout the whole process. I saw the way he took care of both me and my dog during that time and that's when I KNEW he was the one.

We were at a bar in Belltown called Shorty’s. We had only been going out for about 2-3 weeks but that night I told her that I loved her. She and I just had an instant connection and It’s kind of hard to explain but I just knew that I wanted to be with her all the time.

Jen
We share the same sense of humor and have a lot of really stupid inside jokes that NO ONE else would ever find funny.

Jen and I have only been together for 3 years, but she and I have shared so many things together. There was a morning where she woke up with a neck spasm, and couldn't get out of bed. I worked early morning shifts at a bakery at the time, so I was already at work. So when she finally got a hold of me, I left work early to take her to the doctor. When I got home to her, she was lying in bed and crying. The drive home was the worst. I remember thinking that she’s going to need a surgery or that she had a mild heart attack and all the worst things anyone could imagine. We went to the hospital as soon as she was able to get up had her bearings. She was advised by the doctor to stay at home for a couple of days so I was her caregiver and more. That couple of days made us closer than ever. It’s like we were already old and grey and taking care of each other.

We discussed marriage pretty early on. However, I was much more impatient about it than he was. I started bugging him about his timeline about a year and half into our relationship. He kept telling me that he was still saving for a ring and that it was going to take longer than expected. He was always telling me that he was broke, so I believed him. Last September, two years in, we went on vacation with my parents to Orlando. It was his first time meeting them. Prior to the trip, I had asked him if he was going to ask for my dad's permission to marry me, but he told me he thought it would be awkward to ask before he was actually ready to propose. Again, I believed him. On this trip we visited Disney and Universal. I was most stoked about Harry Potter Land, because I'm a huge fan and I'd been dying to go since it opened. I was also super stoked to buy a want from Olivander's wand shop. When we went in, I initially wanted Draco Malfoy's wand, since he's my favorite character. But Draco's wand was kind of plain and boring, so I decided instead to go with Hermione's wand. Some of the wands are "interactive," and allow you to do "magic" in certain parts of the park. So when I got to the register to pay, I asked the girl to make sure I had gotten an interactive wand. She looked at it told me that it wasn't the right one and she grabbed me a "correct" one and asked me to look at it first to make sure everything was alright with it. When I opened the box, there was a ring on it. I was so shocked! I wasn't expecting it at all. And somehow he predicted that I would end up choosing Hermione's wand. It couldn't have been more perfect!

I booked a reservation for a fireworks viewing in Epcot at Disneyworld. Since we went there in September, the weather was mostly rainy and thunderstorms. Sure enough, the night that I was going to propose to her, it was pouring rain and thunder was roaring. Jen’s dad, who we were on vacation with, along with Jen’s mom, advised me to hold off on the proposal since she was already wet and miserable. The fireworks show was delayed for about 2 hours but we braved it and waited until it was show time. I really wanted to do it that night but I’m glad I didn’t. The next day, we were in Universal Studios and planned to go to Harry Potter’s Diagon Ally park. It was perfect because Jen is a huge Harry Potter fan. She even bought a Griffindor robe and wore it all day just like a little kid. Jen, her dad, and her mom went on a ride, and since I get motion sickness, I waited for them at the gift shop. That’s when I came up to the cashier at the Olivander’s wand shop to ask if she could help me propose to my girlfriend. I had seen a video online of a proposal at the wand shop before so I knew that the staff there were friendly and would be helpful. In fact, I had messaged their special events coordinator to ask if I could do a singled out presentation of wand matching, one of the attractions at the Olivander’s wand shop where the shop keeper chooses a spectator to match a wand with, but I was told they no longer allow special favors since they want to be fair to all park goers. Well anyway, I asked the cashier if she would put the ring in one to the wands in a box and keep it behind the counter until Jen comes up to the counter to make her purchase, only the cashier would tell Jen that there is something wrong with the wand that she picked but luckily for her, the cashier has the same wand behind the counter for her and this time the wand will have the ring in it. The cashier did exactly that and what’s funny is Jen picked the Hermione wand, the same wand that I picked out without knowing which one she would pick. She then opened the box to check if it’s the same one she wanted only to find out that there’s a ring around the wand. She was unsure what was going on but realized shortly after that I was proposing to her. She started crying and so I asked her if she would marry me and then she said yes.

Jen
He has the most incredible smile! It makes me swoon!

J.P.
I love her compassion and her big heart towards helping other people. She thinks of other people before herself.

Jen
I'm sure everyone says this, but he's genuinely the most selfless, kind person I've ever met. He's always considerate of me. He's always there for my friends and family. He never talks badly of others or complains about his family. He's a great listener. And I have to admit that I LOVE that he's a mamma's boy. He takes SUCH good care of her.

J.P.
I like that Jen is passionate, intelligent and is not afraid to speak her mind.

Jen
The sexiest thing about J.P. is his tattoos. He only has a few but there's just something so damn sexy about them.

J.P.
I love her blue eyes. I could just stare at them a be lost in a daze.

Jen
We LOVE karaoke. He's much better at it than I am, but we try to go as often as we can. Hula Hula is our typical spot.

J.P.
We walk our puppy dog together and play hide and seek with him. We also like our karaoke.
