Documenting Love: Andrea & Kendall's Story

Welcome to our Documenting Love series where we capture people's love stories through photos and the written word. This may be one of our favorite weekly series! Check out the gallery and read the couples love story below. Keep in mind that we ask the couples to answer the questions separately so we can draw parallels between their experiences and, you know, say a collective, "Ahhhhhhh!" If you or someone you know wants to be featured in this series, please get in touch with us, hello@seattlerefined.com.

Andrea
Tragically, my first distinct memory of Kendall is from junior year in AP Lit. He had just walked into class after asking a girl to a dance and I was just like "why her?" Fortunately, nothing became of that relationship.

Kendall
I don’t really have a first memory, we grew up in the same small town and attended high school together. Andrea was always someone that I knew, so pinpointing a first memory is tough!

Andrea
Ever since we started dating, Kendall and I have tried to figure out how/when we actually met. But I don’t think there was any special moment. We just went to the same high school, had some classes together, and then ended up on ASB together senior year, that’s when we really got to know each other.

Kendall
We each grew up in Sequim, WA., Attended the same high school and likely shared as many as half of our classes junior and senior year. We really started to get to know each other though during our senior year while we were both on Senior Class ASB.

Andrea
Kendall is probably the hardest worker I know! He never fails to give up and he has this drive that pushes him to do whatever he sets his mind to (and then some). These past few months he has been working as the middle school nurse while we are waiting to move for the Army. Each day when he fills me in about his day, I am so impressed how much love and dedication he is putting into this job. He truly cares for these students, he educates them as he works with them, and he is building relationships that I know are changing these students’ lives.

Kendall
I’m proud of Andrea for her outstanding dedication and commitment to her students. Not only did she complete her Bachelors and a double minor in 3.5 years, she then immediately started Grad School. She is currently working on her Masters in Education and dealing with a tough class assignments. Sounds utterly exhausting if you ask me, but every day she is ready to rock ‘n roll with a smile on her face and those 5th graders best interests at heart.

Andrea
We started dating summer 2013 and come August I had had these inklings that I was falling in love with him. I wanted to say it so badly but I kept holding back (I did let it accidentally slip one night). But the night Kendall left to move to San Diego for school and we were hugging and kissing goodbye, all the while sobbing and covered in snot, I just knew. I knew I didn’t want him to leave, I knew I was going to miss him like crazy, and I knew I loved the heck out of him! That’s when I first told him “I love you” and he said it back (he would like to think he said it first). It made the goodbye 1,000 times harder and easier all at the same time.

Kendall
We started dating right at the tail end of senior year and spent a tremendous amount of time together that summer. Realizing I was in love with Andrea only took a few months. By the time we had been together “officially” for about a month I knew I was head over heels for her, the way I felt about Andrea after one summer was completely unlike anything I had experienced before!

Andrea
I wish I could put it into words. I feel like everything sounds so cliche; we’re each other’s best friends, we are super in sync (unfortunately not *NSYNC), and we would do anything for each other. It’s all true, but it’s so much more than the cliche. The majority of our relationship has been long distance and yet we continue to grow together. We cherish our time together, we learn from each other, and we do what we can to strengthen our relationship. Ultimately, I believe our relationship could, and will, withstand any challenge we may face in our future. We have a love that can handle it.

Kendall
We are resilient, and we know how to prioritize. Over the last 4.5 years we have been together, we have been in completely separate states for over a year and never in the same town. While we were both in undergrad, her in Orange County and me in San Diego, we only saw one another on weekends. Due to schedule changes every semester, and the Army dictating much of my summers, we had to always adapt to a new routine every few months. Despite all the time apart from one another, we have steadily grown closer together and made one another a priority. However, we did so with our families, friends, and other obligations in mind so that we kept the balance needed in all areas of our lives.

Andrea
Oh damn, the proposal. I knew it was coming, I just didn’t know when, but I had a pretty dang good idea it would be after Christmas sometime! I was in San Diego for Kendall’s Army commissioning on December 21. I got there Wednesday, Thursday was the commissioning ceremony, and Friday was pack up his apartment day to fly home on Saturday.

The ceremony was amazing and I was so proud of him! Then Friday comes and it’s time to go to his apartment and pack up. I was incredibly lazy, but alas, I was a good girlfriend and helped him take his bed apart and pack up. Once he was ready to go we went to run some errands at Ikea and Costco. After the errands, we were leaving the parking lot and the sun was setting, it was gorgeous. We had to head back to the AirBnB to meet up with our families and head out to dinner. As we got closer to the house, I was like “do we have to go back immediately?” I had really been enjoying our alone time. Kendall said no so we kept driving around Pacific Beach area.

It was at this time Kendall started to get super emotional. He kept going on about how much he was going to miss San Diego and his friends, and that this was his last San Diego sunset. Understandable feelings, but I was a little surprised that he was so upset about it all, specifically the sunset. He really fixated on that. Because of this we decided we would find a parking spot and go watch it. After a lot of circling we finally found a spot. Kendall and I walked out to the boardwalk and stood and watched the sunset, it was freaking cold but pretty! Kendall asked me if I was ready to leave and I was like “I dunno, are you ready to leave dude?”. I was very concerned about his emotional state. He was ready so we turned around to head back to the car. Then he got down on one knee. I was 99 percent convinced he was just kidding, so I was unsure what was happening. Then I put my hands on his and felt the ring box and I was thinking “holy moly this is really happening."

At this point, for whatever reason, the only thing that was coming out of my mouth was “no, no, no, no” then Kendall asked me, “so is that a yes?” and I said “YES!” It was ridiculous and I loved every second of it, although I was seriously freaking out! A chick on rollerblades skated on by and said congratulations.

Kendall
Andrea was down in San Diego for my graduation and commissioning, it was the day before we were going to leave and she was helping me move out of my apartment. As we were out running errands the sun was just starting to set. Looking like it was going to be a beautiful sunset, I knew this was a good opportunity.

Despite having a trip planned to a small cabin in Idaho for the proposal (which she was well aware of), I knew that I couldn’t miss my chance to actually surprise her for once. I remembered how bummed she was to graduate and leave her friends from school when she graduated the semester prior I decided to use this to my advantage. Putting on the guise of being quite sad to be leaving San Diego (which was true) I said “I just realized this will be my last San Diego sunset…would you mind if we went out to the beach to watch it?” So as we are circling around in Mission Beach trying to find a parking spot the sun is sinking lower and lower, meanwhile I’m starting to panic because I am about to lose this opportunity to surprise her! Andrea, being the supportive person she is kept saying “Why don’t you just hop out to watch the sunset and I’ll stay with the car and circle around until you’re done,” which of course would ruin the whole idea making this happen tonight! So I insist that it’s fine, we’ll find a spot eventually.

AT LAST we find parking, hop out of the car and walk over to the board walk. The sun is sinking over the horizon, a chilly breeze is coming off the water, and Andrea is absolutely freezing! The moment was finally about to arrive and for the life of me I had no idea what to say! Eventually we agreed it was time to go, so I said, “Yep…its time….” and got down on one knee. Andrea immediately starts saying “No, no, no no, no no, what’s happening? No no no” as I’m sort of stammering through something heartfelt and meaningful. I really can’t remember what I actually said…there was a lot going on and I was freaking out because she was saying “no” which is absolutely NOT what I was expecting her to say. Just then some girl on roller skates yells "Congratulations!” as she zooms by which got Andrea and I laughing. So despite the “no’s” I was hearing I knew she was freaking out because she was surprised, and me proposing in San Diego was definitely not part of the plan! So I said “Is that a yes?” It was.

Andrea
I love Kendall because he is the most selfless person I know. He would do anything for his family, he would do anything for me, but what means the world to me, is he would do anything for my family. He has picked my sisters up from the airport, he’s gone to the hospital to check on my parents when my sisters and I were unable to, he would truly do anything. I also love Kendall for his ability to surprise me with little things to show me he’s thinking of me. It’s moments like that that give me the warm fuzzies. Kendall is just the kindest and most thoughtful man and he never expects anything in return.

Kendall
I love how compassionate and giving she is. Not only is always there to support and listen to me, but she makes her family and friends a priority. She spends her time and energy to show them she cares, to invest in their wellbeing, and to support them.

Andrea
I think my favorite thing about Kendall is his laugh. But not his everyday laugh, his laugh that only happens when he finds something really freaking funny! It’s so carefree, so adorable, and whenever I hear it I can’t help but laugh myself. I love it so much because it just seems so pure and I know he is truly happy and amused when he does it. There are many other things I love about Kendall, but that laugh brings me so much joy.

Kendall
Andrea is kind, goofy and adorable in so many ways, She is a person who can commit and stick with something, and she is probably the most supportive and loving person you will ever meet in your life. She can bring joy into any room with her smile.

Andrea
The sexiest thing about Kendall is definitely his great body! But if I were to go beyond that, I think the sexiest thing about Kendall is that when he holds me in his arms I feel so safe and loved. Being in his arms puts us in a bubble, just the two of us, that I love more than anything and it brings me so close to him.

Kendall
The sexiest thing about Andrea is her gorgeous figure, her hair, and how incredibly soft her skin is.

Andrea
Our favorite tradition is DOUGHNUTS! Kendall and I go on doughnut tours in cities. So we find the best doughnut places in the area and then go and try all of them out over the course of a day or two. Our first was for Valentine’s Day 2016 in LA. We always try to get a maple bar at each place so we have the same doughnut to compare. We’re working through the states too, our goal is to eat doughnuts in every state. I think we’ve hit up seven states and Washington D.C..

Kendall
We are donut enthusiasts. Whenever we travel somewhere new (and even some places that aren’t so new to us) we research local donut shops and go on what we call “Donut Tours” of that city. Then we always debrief and compare one donut shop to another.
