KOMO and Seattle Refined invite you to BOREALIS - a light art festival taking place for the first time in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle October 11-14. Presented by Comcast, the festival features a first-in-the US, global competition of light artists and a unique combination of live music, lighting art installations, and multi-media video mapping designed to transform the façade of MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry) with visual storytelling. Festivities take place nightly from 5:00 - 10:00 pm.
You can enjoy a walking tour of 25 entertaining and interactive light art displays, scattered throughout the South Lake Union neighborhood, sample local bites from participating food trucks and restaurants, visit the festival beer and wine gardens, and see live music from regional bands, courtesy of Hubbard Broadcasting Group. “Seattle has long established its reputation as a crucible of creativity and innovation, whether it’s in technology, retail, food, music or film,” says Terry Morgan, President of Modern Enterprises and Executive Producer of the festival. “Discovering a new medium that blends both technology and art in an engaging human experience and the opportunity to bring it to Seattle, seemed an ideal way to cultivate both a new audience for the arts and inspire youth to pursue STEM-related creativity.”
The Seattle mapping show is part of a worldwide, juried competition andwas curated by Maxin10sity, the world’s foremost projection mapping technologists. The six finalists chosen out of 40 applicants are from Bratislava, Moscow, Istanbul, Shanghai, Tokyo and Chicago, and will be coming to Seattle to showcase their displays. Each show will run approximately 30 minutes long and will repeat every hour throughout the evening. MOHAI will become a synergy of light, color, motion and sound.
In addition to the video projection mapping showcase, the BOREALIS Light Art Collective, headed by Seattle artist and curator Mary Coss, has organized 25 light art installations that lead from Lake Union Park into the South Lake Union Neighborhood. This self-guided, walking tour features pedestrian-scale engagements created by local, regional and national artists working in the fine art, theatrical art, and lighting design communities and afford viewers an opportunity to explore the many different dining, entertainment and gallery options the neighborhood offers.
