Artist of the Week: Parisalexa

Seattle might be notorious for niche coffee shops and scenic waterways, but locals know it's also home to an array of people who love to create. This city is chock-full of artists who we love to feature weekly on Seattle Refined! If you have a local artist in mind that you would like to see featured, let us know at gmwynkoop@sbgtv.com. And if you're wondering just what constitutes art, that's the beauty of it; it's up to you!

Seattle Refined: How long have you been writing/performing?
Parisalexa: [I've been] writing since I was about five and performing since even before that, according to my mom.

Tell us about the artistic process and the different stages that work into it
When I’m writing songs for myself, often times I am doing something else with my body, so my mind can really wander, like driving or walking my dog. Sometimes I get an idea while I'm out and I have to just repeat it in my head into my voice memos app on my phone until I get to the studio.

Where does your inspiration come from? What other musical artists do you take inspo from?
I’m inspired by true, classic musicians like Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Joel, for example. Currently I’m also really inspired by other young, female, artists-of-color coming into the spotlight and owning their artistry like Melii, Danileigh, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, Kali Uchis, etc.

What kind of genre is your music? What kinds of things do you write about?
It’s kind of hard to categorize my sound to just one genre because I listen to so many different styles of music. An easy synopsis would be pop/R&B. I write about life, self-love, heartbreak, sometimes what I see on TV, things that I know will be relatable to many listeners.

Do you have one song that means more to you or is extremely special to you?
I think writing "Like Me Better" and "Dandelion" were super special to me because I was growing in my self-love and documenting it in real time.

What experiences in your life have shaped your music/art?
I think life actually is art. So I try to write most often when I’m doing things I'd do during my normal daily routine.

If we want to see more of your work where should we go to find? What about upcoming shows?
You can find me on all streaming platforms as 'Parisalexa.' On all social platforms, I’m @parisalexamusic.

What is next for you? Anything you’re working on right now that you’re really excited about?
Album coming soon. Can’t say much right now but I am so hyped for the visuals I have planned in my head to actually come to life.

Lastly, how do you take your coffee? We ask everyone!
No coffee for me please, but I’ll take a ginger tea.
