I called around to several tattoo shops in the Seattle area and the majority of shops have never heard of anyone wanting this service. Who am I kidding, people thought I was crazy when I asked if they did the service! (Image: @optiat /twitter.com/optiat)

People are tattooing on freckles, no joke

Have you ever heard the saying "a face without freckles is like a sky without stars"? Well, people are taking that uber-seriously and literally tattooing those little bad boys on their face and body. We're not kidding. It's the latest craze to hit the beauty world!

This idea is totally foreign to me, so I went straight to an expert to get the down low. Sydney Dyer with 'Sydney Dyer Cosmetics' had the best pics on Instagram, so obviously I had to track her down. Here's a sample of her work:

According to Dyer, the tattoo process for freckles is fairly simple.

"I generally start with a brief consultation with my client, either in person or via email, about their desired end result," she said. "At that point, all questions and/or concerns are addressed. I've been tattooing freckles for roughly two years now and I'd estimate 90 percent of my clientele are like me, completely positive that they want freckles as it's something they've been dreaming of for years, if not their entire lives."

Once upon a time, freckles were considered such aberrations that women would do anything to get rid of, or at least conceal, them. Talk about an about-face: Now, freckles are downright desirable. We always want what we don't have!

Dyer says the tattoos look normal after about three days.

"I tattoo freckles in an 'unofficial' two-step process, reassuring every client there is absolutely no pressure on the first sitting," she said. "This means we can apply 5, 20, 200 - whatever the client feels comfortable with. After that, we wait about a 3-4 week period for touch-ups or additional freckles if desired".

The hashtag #freckletattoo has taken off on Instagram with newly freckled faces sharing their dotted selfies and beauty pros providing info on the service. It's also a savvy way to cover acne and scars.

Maybe Seattleites are not ready to make it permanent? If that's the case - check out the Kickstarter campaign Freck Yourself. You can get 'fake freckles' that'll last for days. All you have to do is order the stencil-like adhesives that will leave your skin sun-kissed and speckled. Or opt for a “freckle pencil" like the one Topshop sells. If you aesthetically love the look of sun-kissed nose and cheeks, it's a way to rock the look minus any UV damage!
