What better night to take your skincare and lip game up a few levels? We turned to the pros at Nordstrom – that’s Northwest Regional Beauty and Fragrance Director Joelle Russo – for her favorite ways to amp your look up for a big night out.
Seattle Refined: Any cool new products that are particularly fun for New Year's Eve?
Joelle Russo: YSL The Shock Mascara ($29) is launching just in time for your New Year’s Eve parties. It’s the perfect way to dress your lashes with length and drama. I think finding a great new red lip is fun and becomes new to you; everyone needs a great red lip and it will pair very well with your shimmer eyes for New Year’s Eve. I always go the MAC counter when I need a new lip color, especially a red lip. You can choose from over 25 reds from a bright cherry to a darker merlot. What I also love is you can find the perfect texture as well - matte to sheer. A red lip will show off your radiant skin and bring a fun party feel to your look.
What's a good product for NYE that can be dramatic for a night out but adapts well to all-the-time wear if you don't want to amp up your look all the time?
I think a fun gold or bronze eyeshadow is a must-have for not only New Year’s Eve, but it will be a beauty must-have for Spring 2017 and can be used day or night. For New Year’s swipe a great shimmering bronze shadow all over the lid and top it off with a great black liner. Two of my faves are the Nars eyeshadow duos in All About Eve for a demure look or, if you want to take it up a notch, Madrague ($35). These duos are long-wearing and can be used wet as a cake liner. I love using Madrague as the base color all over my lid and the lighter shade under my brow bone. I also use the darker shade as my bottom liner for a bit of smolder paired with the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink ($26). It’s a staple product.
What's the biggest manicure trend for NYE this year?
Nails have become like a piece of jewelry. For your party tips, we’re seeing a lot of jewel toned colors; a classic red is always in style, but if you want to play up your hands try a deep navy or a metallic rose gold.
Let's talk hair. What's a cool, festive trend to try out for NYE and a product that can help you get the look?
Tools, tools and tools are the key to festive look for your hair. I think beachy waves or bouncing curls really speak to a fun New Year’s look. Using the DryBar 3 Day Bender Digital Curling Iron ($135) can give you those waves you’ve been seeing everywhere. You do want your hair to have that beautiful, healthy shine to it as well. I recommend finishing off your locks with DryBar Sparkling Soda Shine Spray ($13-$28).
Finally, what are your go-to products for a going out clutch on NYE? Blotting papers, touch up lipstick, etc.?
A great face powder compact with a mirror like Lancôme Dual Finish ($39), as it can be brushed on for a softer touch up or used with a puff to give a little more coverage, and YSL Touche Eclat ($42) to conceal, freshen up, highlight and more - this little gold pen does it all. Lipstick and a fragrance purse-size spray or rollerball are also a must for your clutch.
