Who says the PNW is not a fashion capital of the U.S.?!
Charkow's work has been featured on the runway at the Independent Designer Runway Show at Bellevue Fashion Week and at FashionNXT in Portland. She also recently designed a custom gown using up-cycled fabrics and materials for the Goodwill Glitter Sale.
And what is the look?
Eco-Concious, Modern, Goth.
The clothing Charkow creates from eco-friendly materials is anything but crunchy. Edgy, modern and darkly beautiful, these knits beg to be lived in and loved. Her inspiration includes famous fashion designers like Tom Ford, Helmut, Lang, Vivienne Westwood, Narciso Rodriguez, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Garth Pugh, and Iris Van Herpen as well as costume designers like Colleen Atwood and Eiko Ishoika.
"I was always aware of fashion ever since I was very young. My mom had W Magazine and other fashion magazines laying around the house. She was and still is very fashionable," said Charkow. "As I grew up I was the kid that never seemed to find what they were looking for so at the ripe old age of 12, I started taking sewing classes at my local Ben Franklin's fabric store. My sewing teacher was awesome."
In the meantime, Charkow was consuming fashion shows and learning all she could about the history of the business.
"Then in high school I was tasked with designing the costumes for the 'Midsummer Nights Dream' for my English class. After that I was hooked! Designing just was it for me and it has been ever since," she said.
