Bill Gates, Seahawks, Starbucks, orcas, wine, and apples...all things Washington is well known for.
But what about blueberries? You might be surprised, but our wonderful state is the nation's number one producer of blueberries.
According to the Washington Blueberry Commission, in 2018, Washington state yielded about 129 million pounds of those little blue babies.
"The state’s blueberry industry is thriving and shows no signs of slowing, and farmers are responding to demand by putting more plants in the ground” Alan Schreiber, Executive Director of the Washington Blueberry Commission, said.
“Consumers want a healthy, naturally sweet snack, and new scientific research supports blueberries’ wide range of health benefits for brain function, osteoarthritis and immune system protection.”
Whether you are making fresh blueberry pancakes, muffins, yogurt, smoothie, ice cream, or just want some to snack on, it helps that Washington is home to over 40 different U-Pick Farms in 11 of its counties, so there's plenty to find.
Happy blueberry season, friends!
