What's the best grocery delivery service? We tried 5, here's what we found

Many services are experiencing increased demand, which may result in longer wait times and low inventory. The below are the results we got when attempting to place order on a Wednesday afternoon (April 1, 2020).

Self-quarantining means leaving the house as little as possible. But, we still have to eat, right? Last week, Gov. Jay Inslee extended Washington's stay-at-home order to May 4 — essentially adding a whole month to us working from home and social distancing. Can you imagine what the first non-virtual happy hour is going to be like after this?

Even before Inslee announced the extension, tons of people were opting out of going grocery shopping in-person and transitioning to online grocery delivery as a way to limit leaving the house. So many people, in fact, grocery delivery services have been bombarded with orders, which unfortunately means longer wait times and low inventory.

We decided to attempt to place orders with five different delivery options so we could give you all the information on how long you can expect to wait and how everything works. Again, this may change day to day, so definitely do a little research of your own before embarking on finding the right ordering service for you.

Here's what we found:

QFC

Choose delivery and a time slot, add in your address and start adding items to your cart, then check out with credit or debit. Your order will be placed and delivered at the time you selected. Items like disinfectant wipes and toilet paper were only available in-store. When we attempted ordering on Weds. April 1, the earliest delivery option was four days later on Sunday, April 5.

Fred Meyer

Choose delivery and a time slot, add in your address and start adding items to your cart, check out with credit or debit. Your order will be placed and delivered at the time you selected. When we attempted ordering on Weds. April 1, the earliest delivery option was four days later on Sunday, April 5.

Whole Foods Market

Delivery is through Amazon Prime. Inventory and delivery may be unavailable at times because of increased demand - however when we attempted to make an order, turns out same-day delivery was indeed available!

Shipt

Membership includes same-day delivery, free delivery on orders more than $35 and multiple stores to choose from.

Safeway

When we attempted to make an order on Weds, April 1 - there were no time slots available through Tuesday, April 7, which was the last option to schedule a delivery.

In conclusion, if you're able to plan ahead a couple days - QFC and Fred Meyer are likely your best bets. If planning isn't your forte and you have the extra $14 a month - give Shipt a try! Stay safe out there everyone.
