Whether you're a fan of whiskey on the rocks, the perfect Manhattan, or the simplicity of a martini, you can find Washington's best booze at PROOF this weekend.
PROOF: Washington Distiller's Festival is the largest craft distillery festival in the United States, and 40 craft distilleries from around Washington will be giving out samples of their spirits. You can meet the distillers, talk to them about their distilling business, listen to music, and nibble on delicious food from restaurants like Moonshine BBQ and Urbane.
"I'm passionate about distilling. I got into this business because I knew that the industry was going to be robust here because of Washington's successful beer and wine industries," said Steven Stone, Owner and Distiller of Sound Spirits Distillery. "Distilled spirits are a natural trifecta for local consumers passionate about locally made craft products. Plus, my great-great-grandfather is from Kentucky. So, I feel I have a natural calling by my heritage!"
Sound Spirits was Seattle's first distillery since Prohibition. Stone says the distillery scene has changed a lot over the years, and the last few years have been especially disruptive.
"The biggest change has been the privatization of the industry," said Stone. "Both the retailing and distribution systems were changed from being run by the state to private companies. This caused quite a disruption in the marketplace above and beyond the hefty tax increase that was also included in the privatization measure."
Despite the ever-changing industry, Stone says things are still going well. He thinks you won't be able to help but notice the difference when you taste locally made spirits.
"Our spirits are handmade, using traditional pot stills and local ingredients," he said. "Whether sipped neat or in cocktail form, people will notice the high quality and delectable flavor of our spirits."
General admission tickets to PROOF are $45 and VIP tickets are $75.
