Just a gal, a trailer and some crazy amazing cakes

When both the weather and the world are gloomy and depressing, then there is only one obvious solution. Cake.

And not just any old cake. We suggest you try the stunningly gorgeous and oh-so-delectable cakes created by baker Charlie Dunmire for Deep Sea Sugar & Salt, which has just moved into its first retail location in Georgetown’s quirkily charming Trailer Park Mall.

Open every weekend from noon-to-7 on Saturdays or noon-to-4 on Sundays, Charlie’s cute little shop carries 3-5 flavors of sliced cake plus cookies, cupcakes and drip coffee.

The cake flavors will be different each week, to include old favorites and new creations, though Charlie always endeavors to have something for every kind of sweet tooth - chocolate, citrus, berry, cream and spice. How about customer favorite The London Fog, an Earl Grey tea cake soaked in a honey syrup, filled with a bergamot mascarpone cream and topped with an Earl Grey cream cheese buttercream frosting? Or a spiced carrot cake with pineapple, filled and frosted with a browned butter cream cheese icing and topped with edible gold? Other hits include the PNW Chocolate - a dark chocolate cake soaked with Douglas fir syrup - and her S’mores cupcakes. Charlie’s cakes are very Seattle. “I’m inspired by local flavors, from Douglas fir to Georgetown Brewery's 9lb Porter. The PNW continues to offer endless inspiration.”

Charlie’s baking odyssey started when she was 17 and was making sandwiches and serving coffee at The Edmonds Bakery. After months of curiosity and pestering, she finally got the chance to work in the bakery itself and from there she didn’t look back, making her way through several Seattle bakeries, learning different methods, styles and recipes. Always creative, she fell in love with cakes after accepting a cake decorating job at Whole Foods. Baking and decorating cakes allowed her to combine her love of food and flavors with her passion for art and design.

Baking everything herself in a Queen Anne kitchen, Charlie started taking cake orders and came up with the name Deep Sea Sugar & Salt to reflect her love of the ocean - before opening her shop she worked summers in Alaska cooking on a processing ship. Last April she rolled out her cake club - buy 5 cakes, get the sixth free - delivering seasonal cakes to members once a month, and hoped one day to open a retail location somewhere in Georgetown.

An invitation to take one of the trailers in the Georgetown Trailer Park Mall was a dream come true. “How could I say no? It is the perfect fit. It's been the best little big step for the business.”

We visited on opening weekend, to find Charlie in her super cute trailer, which she has lovingly equipped with custom cabinetry, a little coffee nook, cozy inside and outside seating and a spot for her ceramic tiger Dusty, who has been with her since childhood.

Buying cakes from Charlie is a great excuse to visit the fabulous Georgetown Trailer Park Mall, situated behind the Seattle Tavern & Pool Room on Airport Way South. The eight beautiful vintage trailers host an eclectic community of independent artists, designers, makers and collectors selling clothing, art and vintage and collectible items, in a fun and funky community setting.
