702 Grill: Go for the Breakfast Menu, Stay For the Happy Hour

I first dined at Oly Rockfish Grill in downtown Olympia for a book club gathering.

My girlfriends raved about the food and the back bar area has luxe seating perfect for happy hour and chats about multi-dimensional characters, unexpected plots, and settings we dream of seeing firsthand someday. As I left that evening I quickly texted another friend to line up a brunch date for the following Saturday morning. I had peeked at the breakfast menu and although full to the brim from happy hour nibbles, I was ready to return.

Since those first two experiences, I’ve visited Oly Rockfish Grill - now called 702 Grill - countless times. It’s a favorite for sure! Whether you’re meeting up for brunch, a midday meeting, or after work for a quick bite and drinks, 702 Grill is the place to be!

Their menu is fresh, creative, and home to dishes I crave often. At brunch it's always a toss up between a scramble, eggs benedict, or a hash. The perfectly poached eggs almost always win. Those are something I've yet to master at home, so I'm always eager to enjoy poached eggs while out. Of course with a heavy drizzle of hollandaise on top! Hollandaise is surely the sauce of heaven and 702 does it well. Often, a girlfriend and I will each order something different and split so we can sample more of 702 Grill’s offerings. Such a smart dining tactic, if you ask me!

There are sweet options at breakfast too. My daughter is a huge fan of the crepes filled with sweetened cream cheese and topped with warm berry reduction and the bananas foster waffle are truly divine; such a delicious way to wake up and begin the day!

Midday meals offer appetizers like crab & artichoke dip and oysters on the half shell, both starter and entree salads - the fried goat cheese one is fantastic, steaks, as well as sandwiches and seafood. The grilled turkey sandwich is a personal favorite thanks to the honey bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, avocado, garlic, aioli, and cranberry sauce on grilled sourdough. I mean, isn’t that a perfect combination of flavors?

It’s probably no surprise that 702 Grill rocks their happy hour. From 4 to 6 p.m. each day $6, $8, and $10 specials will keep you coming back. I can never decide between the crab wontons with spicy Asian sauce or the spiked wings. When my husband joins me he’s always wagering between blackened fish tacos with tomatillo salsa and beef sliders with fixin’s including a decadent bacon jam.

When it comes to bar drinks, folks rave about 702 Grill’s homemade Bloody Mary. I’m a lemondrop girl and can never decide which flavor to sip Mango POM, pomegranate, blueberry, or strawberry?!? The mojitos are worth tasting and the beer line up will suite brew lovers well.

Service is always impeccable. The wait staff is quick to fill drinks and knowledgeable about the menu - two things I truly appreciate. Numerous times I’ve witnessed the kitchen make modifications for allergies and preferences with ease and all staff juggle date duos and large parties with grace.

My girlfriends and I always say we want to try something new when we have a chance to meet up ... and then we find ourselves right back at our same table! Although the name has changed, the food, service, and atmosphere make 702 Grill a delightful dining experience for brunch and beyond. Don’t miss out!
